Picking up the meme (from who probably nicked it off), what riles me is people who get on the train in the morning with a ribbon round their necks with one of those electronic swipe-card thingies that you need to get into modern office blocks. You can just tell that they are all 'public sector workers'. Or possibly just complete twats.
FFS, I have a front door key in case nobody is in when I get home of an evening - as do most of us, I guess - does anybody carry their front door key on a ribbon round their necks?

The plastic fob thingy got damaged when I put it on the key ring....
So yes I wear it on a chain. Then aian, as a woman I rarely have pockets and I usually don't take my handbag with me every time i want a coffee, ciggie or bathroom break.
And no, not a public service twat, just a widdle coding peon in a private company.

Isn't it called a lanyard not a ribbon? Or are these people with actualy ribbons?
salegamine has it right - women's clothes are often disappointingly deficient in the pocket department.
And being hopelessly absent minded, I do, indeed wear my front door key on a ribbon round my neck (a rather fetching tartan one) whenever I go out sans handbag in said clothes.
The way I see it, I may look faintly ridiculous but it's far less embarrassing than being caught breaking into my own house on my return.
I have a card that I only need to wave near a pad. I keep it in my wallet so that I actually wave the wallet near the pad. If I were younger I might just leave the wallet in my hip pocket and jump up next to the pad.
The people wearing their cards round their necks on the train do indeed look stupid.
I thought just the same thing when I used to go by train a few years back.

Since you often have to use these to open internal doors within offices too, it's a lot easier to have it around your neck than to keep it in a pocket. And they're used by all kinds of large organisations, not just public sector ones. As you said, an irrational hatred :p
Not up this way they don't wear them.
It's the same principle with name badges at conferences. There is an event horizon about 10 yards around the venue within which name badges are acceptable, outside which they make you look like a complete plonker.
Not too dissimilar to the cyclists in full fetish lycra, helmet and clacky clacky cycling shoes standing pub trans.
