A Nation Of Bookkeepers

From High Fliers' graduate jobs survey, June 2010:

The sectors that are taking on most graduates in 2010 are accountancy (over 3,950 graduate jobs), investment banks (more than 2,200 positions); and the public sector (over 2,180 positions); the smallest graduate employers are those in chemicals & pharmaceuticals (0.4% of total) and the consumer goods manufacturers (1.1% of total).

This makes sense. If you've got a BA and want a career in the food industry or the pharma industry, far better to get a graduate job in accountancy, consulting or investment banking (and hence get paid gbp20-35k a year whilst you're being trained up) with a sector focus, then jump ship after 3-5 years as an experienced professional, rather than joining straight out of uni on gbp16k.

(and of course, the survey is of undergrads - the number of PhDs going into the pharma industry is rather higher...)
