Excellent!

Spotted at Liberal Conspiracy by Newmania:

One interesting question in the most recent YouGov survey* asked people to decide “If the Government did decide to cut back on its plans for spending, which two or three of these would you most like it to cut?”

The answers should give all of us some pause for thought. The results were as follows (people were allowed to pick up to three) :

Payments to international bodies such as the UN and EU 72
Overseas aid 67
Projects to avert climate change 39
Subsidies to farmers industry and the Post Office 18

The armed forces 16
Upgrading Britain’s infrastructure (e.g. roads railways) 11
Welfare benefits and tax credits for poorer families 10
Child benefit 7
The police 3
Schools 2
Pensions 1
Hospitals 1

Seeing as education and health are by far and away the highest spending departments (ignoring welfare, which is transfer payments) and at least a third of their budgets is wasted (i.e. doesn't go within a million miles of 'the frontline'), the total waste in those two departments is actually far higher than in the first four categories, which have much smaller budgets but by definition consist of 100% waste, and possibly more than 100% if you include the damaging effect that they have on the economy.

All very encouraging nonetheless :-)

* The 'recent' survey was actually held in January 2009. LibCon links to this but I can't make it work, maybe you have to register or something. The only reference I can find is the original article in The Sun.

Note that self interest and not any understanding of the economic problems facing the country have driven the answers. No wonder Labour is voted into power so often.

A, sure, it's also true that more than half of people would also vote for 'higher house prices' in the delusion that this would help us out of the recession.

But I fail to see how UN, EU etc are helping us?

Interesting MW that 1 came out top, especially as the EU according to the politicos does not rank highly on the doorstep! 3 is based on an unproven science and 2 is a policy that gives to those that invariably have.

It really is time to cull the present politicos! Maybe we shud put them in a field of cows? Or is that an udderly impossible scenario?

But the sad thing is, as with any poll or referenda that actually expresses 'the peoples' views and conflicts with the political classes view.It will be ignored and/or dimissed by those people because as always 'they know what's best for us' and they believe it with every fibre of their being and nothing will sway them from their course except a short rope and a long drop

Its hardly encouraging when people go ever deeper into selfishness and ignorance mode.

The top 3 things for cuts stop destruction and help association. The very things that bring about advance.

A more extreme case of this stupidity would be to cut:

1) Peace
2) Progress
3) Prosperity

Can you not see this? Maybe I missed the point.

WFW, let's milk that analogy for all it's worth.

JH, PC, exactly. But politicians need the EU, UN etc to keep them going once they get voted out. It's a glorified pension scheme.

RS, neither the UN nor the EU contribute to "stop destruction and help association" or "Peace, Progress, Prosperity", so you have missed the point. See my reply to JH, PC.

MW

There's nothing wrong with paying credit to start a propserous enterprise, such as are the aims of the UN.

There is a great deal wrong with the payments going to the corrupt institutions who command them.

We all know who they are! So I think I do get it in a round about way. Maybe you didnt look deep enough?
