"Inquiry demand as girl battered in cow attack"

From Get Reading:

Emma Gregory suffered cracked teeth, cuts and bruises during the incident in Loddon Drive on Thursday, July 7, while her nine-year-old golden retriever ‘Skipper’ suffered a broken back and is being treated at St Fitzpartick Animal Hospital in Guildford.

The 16-year old, who lives in Thames Street, Sonning, was riding along a public footpath through the field with Skipper – who was on a lead – when they were chased by a herd of around 30 cows and a bull. She was kicked in the face during the attack, but managed to escape further injury by leaping over a barbed wire fence...

Meanwhile, HSE has been called in to investigate after Mrs Gregory contacted them to complain. She believes the field has inadequate signs warning people of the potential dangers of crossing a field containing cattle and questions whether the herd has been assessed as placid and well behaved...

And so on and so forth. Worth following the link for the splendid close-up picture of her injuries.

The mother probably thinks burgers come from the meat fairy...

L, and it's good to see the farmer throw the traditional defence of the dog-owner back in the dog-owner's face "Oh, my cows don't normally attack people", usually accompanied by expression of injured innocence as if the attackee had somehow been asking for it.

Confused by "rode". Was she riding on the dog? If not, then (lived in The Country aged 10-16) for fuck's sake, you don't ride a horse whilst walking a dog on a lead, that's just Silly.

Cute, though. And like the fact she was rushed off for emergency dental surgery. England has changed since I were a lad.

No need to put up signs - cows are pretty easy to spot even without binoculars. Bulls are too when standing up - as this one obviously was.

JB, that's where it gets murky. I can't work out whether she was riding a horse or a bike, and the caption to the picture says "walking her dog".

AKH, they're easily visible unless they hide behind bushes and jump out at you, of course.

Do you have any there on cows being attacked?

JH: "Do you have any there on cows being attacked?"

What, apart from the millions of cows that get turned into burger, steaks, glue and footwear every year?

If she'd been on a bike, they'd have said "cycling". If she'd been on a horse, they'd have said what happened to it. Wot a mystery!

Well. I spent a happy half-hour wandering around Sonning and its surroundings, courtesy of Google StreetView. Thames Street was as large as life. There doesn't seem to be a Loddon Drive though. I wonder if the reporter misheard London Road?

Anyway I did find some cattle. So assuming that they are the ones, the herd seems to have been in an open byre on Sonning Farm when the GoogleCar went past. You can see them if you go to Charvil Lane and take a look at the farm buildings. The "satellite" view also shows them in one of the neighbouring fields if you go to the highest resolution. They look like Friesians going by their colouring. Neither picture gives a close enough view to see much else.

Why don't we just lock up people who are too stupid to be let out on their own, even with a more intelligent woofer for company?
