Get with the programme!

Apparently Chris Grayling gave a speech at the Welfare to Work Convention at Birmingham ICC yesterday. I wonder who else attended? You can download the programme here and gaze in wonderment at the number of government departments, fakecharities, lobbyists and kleptocrat companies who sent delegates or speakers.

Here's a list of bodies concerned from the first page, there are another three pages after that, with links to some of the choicer "About us" pages:

A small nuclear device seems to have been needed....

L, that was my first thought, but it wouldn't make any difference. As long as the government/politicians want to spend taxpayers' money on all this, there'll be plenty of otherse willing to step into the breach.

Wow. The sound of all that CPD being recorded and boxes being ticked must have been deafening.

It's yet another widening of the public and private sectors.

A friend of mine told me recently that the computer training business is basically now being filled with people from government and the regulated sectors. They'll still spend £1200/week on training while the private sector spend money on services like lynda.com where you pay $50/month and watch courses online.

FT, they have "quickfire sessions" and "breakout sessions" so that you can tick a lot of boxes in a short space of time.

TS, yes, all this goes some way to explaining where the extra £150 billion a year government spending goes. It sure as heck is not going into "frontline services" like libraries or public toilets.

Mark,

Well, none of it costs them anything.

One of the problems with rule-driven bureaucracies (and this also applies to the private sector) is that having a jolly costs far more than in a small business. I've worked for entrepreneurs and what they will do is just take the team down the pub for a meal. They don't have to look down the approved expenses category list, they just pay for it. So, they take everyone out for a curry and beer at say, £30 each.

In a large bureaucracy (and I include big private businesses) you have to find ways to get a jolly that don't look like a jolly. So this includes things like team building courses and seminars. The staff get nothing from these events but they're not exactly complaining because they get a couple of days out of the office and a meal and maybe a few drinks on the company.

The Olympics is basically an insanely huge version of this. The politicians have spent £10bn of our money to get a few meals with sponsors and some tickets for top events. They get a total of a couple of million in perks in exchange for destroying £10bn+ of public money.

TS, you're kind of missing the point. It's not just that this was clearly a jolly - it's that most of the organisations concerned add no value to anybody and shouldn't even exist.

AC, in a nutshell, what is wrong with this country is that far too many people are being paid far too much to do far too little of any value.
